So my reaction is skewed toward shaking my head, not laughing. However... this video got me quickly past that. Check out the "I am a secret dissident" motif the guy chose. The hood. The shades. (Of course it turns out the the original charges by the DNC were bogus (the Vast Conspiracy was a facebook group with 23 people). Still, even if that wasn't the case, this forwarding trick would be a thing of beauty.)

Earl Ofari Hutchinson, president of the Los Angeles Urban Policy Roundtable, denounced the image and called on those behind it to reveal themselves. "Depicting the president as demonic and a socialist goes beyond political spoofery.

The entire quote is boring and whine-y... I only reproduce it 'cuz the term "spoofery" amuses me. Who says that? Spooooooooooooooooooooooooof-er-y.

The liberal tabloid "LA Weekly", which depicted George W. Bush, the former president, as Dracula on its cover in 2004, denounced the Obama-Joker poster as virulently racist.

Hee hee... Media Matters is wingeing about the MSM even mentioning the image. (Neglecting to mention that the MSM was reporting that the image had gone viral, not that it was seen in LA. Typical MM.)

Interesting take here:

Given that the meeting was over in the blink of an eye, it was little better than theater. But theater is vital in politics, and Biden's presence turned the play into something altogether more reassuring. The white man was not outnumbered by the black.

Why is this important? I venture that in Obama's careful calibration of his post-racial America there is always a fear of white fear. He is exquisitely sensitive to white-- particularly non-elite white--impressions of his occupancy of the White House. He is eager not to disconcert Middle America, and had blundered only days before in his intervention in the Gates-Crowley affair. This ruffled many whites: They were taken aback, disquieted and were reminded, perhaps, of Obama's remarks about bitter and intolerant small-town voters who cling to their faith and guns, made before the Pennsylvania primary.

Any odd mix of messages. (A better caption might be more along the lines of "Some men just want to watch the world burn.") I think it's funny that folks like the guy at the LA Weekly have declared it ... racist! Could their knees jerk any faster? "White face" doesn't always mean "Minstral Show"; it can mean ... clowns. For that matter... Goths. Or... Rocky Horror Picture Show. Sheesh.

It's also very odd that lots of the news articles about the picture in El Lay don't actually show the picture. The only example of similar that comes to mind is that of the Danish Muslim cartoons.

News today has spread about new stem cell research out of China. Two teams used mouse fibroblasts, a kind of cell found in skin connective tissues, to create induced pluripotent skin cells (iPS), which were then used to create living mice.

... Their breakthrough research suggests that both cloning full animals from stem cells and the creation of completely pluripotent stem cells from skin cells are both not only possible, but a current reality. ...

The first task for either study was to create stem cells from non stem cells. Embryonic stem cells, controversial because they often come from the destruction of live embryos, are what is called "pluripotent," which means they can become any cell in the body. To be able to create cells that act like embryonic stem cells, without the embryo part, opens to door to a fascinating and less-controversial field of medical research, including organ repair or even full organ replacements that are guaranteed to match the host's body. Just imagine never having to look for donors for bone marrow or a heart, and you can get the idea of how amazing this research could be.

However, the fact that these stem cells were able to be pluripotent, even 1.1% of the time, gives a lot of hope to future medical research. Indeed, we might just be able to create tissues or organs on demand from a patient's own cells in the next 50 years, which would save the lives of many suffering from a variety of diseases. A company from Taiwan named Singtex Industries discovered a way to turn used coffee grounds into wearable yarn!

It's called S. Café tm fabric, and it's the brainchild of a few research scientists who also double as coffee connoisseurs. Singtex Industries general manager Jason Yen and three fellow scientists basically created a process that recycles coffee grounds into tiny-sized particles. These particles are then woven together to create the S. Café tm fabric, which can be used for both knitted and woven clothing. A single cup of coffee can make two T-shirts.

The best aspect about this fabric is that it's fast –drying, it doesn't smell and it even protects you from UV rays!

Low-Level Kerry and Boxer Aides "rebut" Palin!

So the Washington Post has published an OpEd piece, signed by John Kerry and Senator Ma'am. It is meant to be a refutation of Sarah Palin's OpEd on "Cap-and-Tax".

It starts out with the assertion that they hope "for a substantive dialogue" and that they "want to put facts ahead of fiction and real debate ahead of rhetorical bomb-throwing." The problem, though, is that they piece is pretty much void of substantive anything, and is just bomb-throwing.

Heck, in the paragraph that immediately follows, they pretend that Palin opposes "clean energy legislation" as if that was identical to the "cap-and-trade" bill. Do they even understand their own bill?

Other than making a couple of undefended assertions, that the bill (somehow) will Save Us All and that the bill will (somehow) create Millions of Jobs(!), there is nothing that comes close to addressing the bill or why it should be supported. The rest of the article can be summarized as this : "If you are against our bill, you are just like people who opposed clean water". That's it read it yourself and count the number of times this trope repeats, with "acid rain", "superfund", etc.

If they wanted to take a stab at substance they could have given some examples of the assertion that "Each time, our environmental laws have cleaned the water we drink, the air we breathe and the communities we live in at far lower cost than initially expected". It isn't relevant to cap-and-trade, but it would be interesting if true.

It seems that the National Alliance on Mental Illness has created a website in an effort to crush Psycho Donuts. (There's no mention of ownership on the website, but if you click on the "Contribute" link, it takes you to a PayPal form for "NAMI Santa Clara County". Oops.)

BTW, their shirt slogan is "PDISNOTPC". Does anyone think that being PC is good? Even the hardest core leftie type will bristle at being called "PC" these days. Here's what wikipedia says, for example :

I'm kinda wondering if the guy who owns the self-refuting mental illness is not a joke blog is off his meds. He started directing his readers to "yelp", to dive the numbers down... then "reports" lower ratings at though they were meaningful.

Now he/she/it is declaring that a donut shop in Michigan(!) "push Psycho Donuts of Campbell, California off the news radar" ... as if it was getting news coverage these days. The place sounds cool, actually... but it's not clear what sort of mental processes would lead the theme of "Cops and Doughnuts" (which sounds like it's a general bake shop that's owned by actual cops) to be associated with "Psycho Donuts" which has only wacky donuts.

Weirdness.

I just can't get enough of the crazy spin that "Sarah Triano" or "Rebecca Wegley " (actual user that posts on the faebook group) places on his/her experience :

The owners must have learned that their violent approach yesterday was not effective cause they toned it down a bit and tried a divide and conquer strategy instead:
. The owners tried to pick us off one by one. The first thing they did was pull NAMI Santa Clara County's ED, Brian, aside for a "private meeting." When he made it clear he wasn't going to be co-opted, they told him this was like a boxing match and "things can get ugly in a boxing match." "People can get hurt," they said. They said the picket was helping their business, so Brian brilliantly asked them why they needed to harass and intimidate us then? If we're good for your business, he asked them, then why don't you just leave us alone and let us do our thing?
. They had a magician on site and an accordion player outside the store to try and drown us out (wonder how much they had to pay for both of those);
. They had two counter-protesters standing outside the shop, who were joined by the owners for most of the picket. The owners were dressed in their white lab coats and stethoscopes and continued their intimidation tactics by insulting us as we marched by. One asked me where my nice twin was since the evil one showed up today. Another owner yelled at one of our folks who uses a cane "hey crippled boy, how's that stick working out for you?" They asked us all kinds of questions, like "So, what's the schedule for the pickets? We'd like to inform our magician." They kept asking, "Where's Rebecca?" They tried to get our picketers to stop and talk to them so they could have us arrested for not moving and blocking the sidewalk.
. The owners also continued their intimidation tactics by having a guy in dark sun glasses park right in front of the shop in a big black suburban wearing a "Psycho Donuts" security badge. He watched us the entire time.
. One of our folks overheard an owner doing a media interview in which he lied and said, "I've asked to meet with John Mitchem of NAMI Santa Clara County, and he said he would get back to me." That's a lie. What happened was last week the owner approached both John and I (separately) to do a debate on the radio with him and we politely refused and repeat our request for a meeting with the coalition.
. One of the shop's supporters backed right into the police lieutenant's car and damaged it.

Talking to the leaders of the protest is "divide and conquer"? I'm not a big fan of accordian music, but I don't think that it's eeeeeeeeeeeeevil. BTW, I've never seen a street magician who could "drown out" anyone.

I am shocked, shocked that a rent-a-cop was wearing .... dark glasses... scary scary scary.... on the hottest, sunniest weekend of the year. Obviously, the man is a fascist.

Psycho-Protest

I saw this craziness posted on a facebook group created by a handful of people that have decided to Take Offense at the Threat to Civilization : donuts. Among the many things that stand out:

The claim that the donut shop was "violent"... but in what way? Because the also had a megaphone? Because they didn't want to the protesters sucking up their parking?
The 60s was a long time ago; do you really need to start every chant with "Hey Hey Ho Ho" or by counting? Just sayin'
What kinda weird Teamsters are doing to come out against a donut shop? If any show up, I don;t think they're real.
California State Assembly Member Jim Beall is apparently taking advantage of his lack of any pending business. We can be thankful that this robust economy and out well-managed state budget afford him the leisure time to suck a bit of fun out of our lives.
This silliness mirrors the broken political culture in which we live. They dug up "Cindi" who used to work for the donut shop and has complaints about how she was treated. Are the valid complaints? Who cares.... it's irrelevant to the "issue". In the Age of Obama, relevance doesn't matter... you just pick up any hammer yu find and start swinging. Yuck.

This morning, F.U.S.E (Friends United to Support Equality) conducted a peaceful, non-violent picket of Psycho Donuts. It was very successful:
. About 35 of us showed up representing many different organizations;
. We distributed over 200 flyers;
. While some people in cars heckled us, the large majority of people driving by honked in support and cheered for us;
. We were interviewed by NBC11's weekend morning anchor/reporter, Kris Sanchez and she had a film crew there filming the picket;
. California State Assembly Member Jim Beall showed up in support and brought Teamsters local 287 president, Bob Blanchett, with him. Mr Blanchett said he could possibly assist us in getting their members out to support us;
. An ex-employee of Psycho Donuts, Cyndi, showed up and joined us - she shared about the horrible conditions she had to work under and the inhumane way in which she was fired;
. The police showed up but left us alone.
. We chanted, "5-6-7-8, Psycho Donuts peddles hate," "Stigma costs lives," "Hey-hey, ho-ho, the straightjacket has got to go," and "Psycho Donuts has no shame, Psycho Donuts change your name."

The owners pulled out all the stops and stooped to an all-time low:
. They tried to have our cars towed, but none of us were parked in their lot;
. They sent representatives out at various times to yell and scream obscenities at us. One gentleman carrying a Psycho Donuts flag followed me calling me a "communist, nazi bitch."
. Another rep of the shop came out wearing a black jail suit and a hannibal lecter mask and chased us around with a bullhorn calling us "idiots" "PC police," "bullies," and all kind of other hateful things. For our part, we never called any of them names. We remained nonviolent in both action and word.
. They tried to antagonize us by screaming profanities at us while children were all around. I couldn't believe it. We just stayed quiet, held our signs, and continued to march...hopefully a much better example to the children there.
. One of the owners, Kipp, came out with a bullhorn and taunted, "Ours is bigger and louder than yours." He criticized our posters saying people couldn't read them, tried to get some of the picketers into an argument and tried to block our way, but we all remained calm and went around him (like water around a rock). We refused to retaliate and continued to educate.
. They sent out several youth wearing Obama tshirts who yelled at us that Obama would want us to talk, not picket. We explained that we had been asking for a month for a meeting with the owners to talk, but they refused. I wonder how the Obama camp would feel if his staff knew his name was being used to justify hatred and the perpetuation of stigma, stereotypes, and discrimination against people with disabilities. I almost wanted to stop and tell them that I am from Chicago, and actually the President would probably support us because he is a seasoned community organizer and knows the power of nonviolent, peaceful protest.
. Toward the end, the owners brought out boxes of free donuts. Some of our folks were a little upset by this at first, but I reminded them that every donut they gave away for free cut into their profits.

They exhibited the very disregard for humanity that we were there protesting, so it really worked in our favor. But it was quite upsetting to have them yelling at us and rattled many of us. But we prevailed, had a good time exercising our constitutional rights, and got to know a lot of new people. If I've left anything out, for those of you who were there, please feel free to add anything.

Given the owners violent tactics, we really need more people out supporting us tomorrow. PLEASE, if you can, come out and hold a sign for an hour. We'll be there from 8:30 - 10:30 am at 2006 Winchester Boulevard in Campbell.

Yeah, good luck with that. This is what we're going to see: a Mormon woman and business owner who gave $100 to the pro-Prop 8 campaign having to stand in front of a group of gays like some poor cretin in the dock at a Stalinist show trial:

The tall, frail Christofferson stood in the center of the group. She appeared to be shaking during her prepared remarks which lasted about 3 minutes. Two young female family members flanked her to prevent her from fainting, according to a restaurant employee. At several points during her speech, Christofferson simply became too emotional to continue.

El Coyote has become the latest casualty in the local outburst against the passage of Proposition 8, an anti-marriage amendment to the California State Constitution. Dozens of e-mails and websites, including the popular online local guide, Yelp.com, have urged boycotting the legendary cafe in recent days.

Christofferson, who is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, insisted that her donation was personal, and reflected her religious faith.

"I've been a member of the Mormon Church all my life," she said. "This was a personal donation. In like fashion, any employee here would be free to donate, worship or support anything of their personal choosing. Over the Coyote has financially supported many charities and thousands of dollars most particularly have been given to the gay interests and charities. The restaurant does not support any political group."

In the only question taken by Ms. Christofferson after her remarks, and before those gathered, I asked her directly if she would personally make an equal donation to the campaigns to repeal Proposition 8.

"I cannot change a lifetime of faith," she said.

Moments later, the same group which had been invited for lunch and margaritas grew increasingly verbal, apparently reacting to the lack of a direct apology from Ms. Christofferson, and she left the building in tears. The group continued to meet for another 30 minutes, before dispersing for what appeared to be a looming boycott. One demonstrator was already shouting outside.

Understand what is happening here. This is a business owner who has served clientele, including gays, without incident for many years. She even gave money to gay charities. But she is a Mormon, and her religious commitment leads her to support traditional marriage. For that, she is treated like a criminal, and reduced to either renouncing her faith or possibly losing her business.

Although I have not always been the most outspoken advocate of President-Elect Barack Obama, today I would like to congratulate him and add my voice to the millions of fellow citizens who are celebrating his historic and frightening election victory. I don't care whether you are a conservative or a liberal -- when you saw this inspiring young African-American rise to our nation's highest office I hope you felt the same sense of patriotic pride that I experienced, no matter how hard you were hyperventilating with deep existential dread.

Yes, I know there are probably other African-Americans much better qualified and prepared for the presidency. Much, much better qualified. Hundreds, easily, if not thousands, and without any troubling ties to radical lunatics and Chicago mobsters. Gary Coleman comes to mind. But let's not let that distract us from the fact that Mr. Obama's election represents a profound, positive milestone in our country's struggle to overcome its long legacy of racial divisions and bigotry. It reminds us of how far we've come, and it's something everyone in our nation should celebrate in whatever little time we now have left.
